How to Include Your Dog in Your Wedding (without the stress)
Fellow dog lover here, let me offer some photo-friendly guidance on including your fur babies in your wedding or elopement!
For many couples, their dog is more than just a pet, they're family. So when you're planning a wedding that truly feels like "you," it makes sense to include your furry best friend(s). Whether they’re walking down the aisle with ya, joining for just a few portraits or making a subtle cameo, there are plenty of ways to involve your dog in your wedding day without adding chaos or stress.
Here’s how to make it happen with both heart and practicality.
Before you get too far into planning, it’s worth considering if your dog would genuinely enjoy being part of the day. Some pups are total extroverts and will thrive with the excitement and attention. Others might be better celebrated from afar. Think about their personality and comfort level around kiddos, loud music, strangers and long days.
If your dog isn’t a good fit for attending the wedding itself, don’t worry—there are still many sweet ways to include them (more on that below).
Tips for a Smooth Day with Your Dog
Including your dog in your wedding can be beautiful, but it does require a little extra planning. Here’s what makes the experience easier on everyone:
Practice basic training leading up to the big day. A lot will be going on, so your dog should at least sit when needed or come when called - ideally during your ceremony!
Have a Dedicated Handler. Assign someone your dog knows (or hire a local pet attendant) to be fully responsible for your pup that day. That includes walking, feeding, giving medications, bathroom breaks and knowing when it’s time for a nap.
Check Your Venue Rules. Confirm that your venue allows pets and where they’re permitted on-site. Be clear about any leash policies or off-limits areas.
Give your vendors a heads up as a courtesy and so they can prepare however they may. Some vendors have allergies, some have a special treat to offer. I know I like to consider my posing options in advance when dogs are included!
Pack a Doggy Day Bag. Bring the essentials: leash, water bowl, very enticing treats, poop bags, towel, a favorite toy, crate, dog bed, lint roller and a backup collar or harness.
Plan for Photos Wisely. Tire your dog out a bit before the day gets going so their extra energy isn’t an issue. Include your dog during getting ready, portraits, or right after the ceremony and then let them relax somewhere quiet. This keeps things low-key and stress-free for both of you.
Think About Outfit Comfort. A floral collar, bandana, or simple bowtie is great, make sure it fits well and isn’t annoying for your dog to wear. I suggest keeping it on-theme and lean into something classic. You want them to wear something photo-worthy as they’ll be in lots of photos! I know my everyday leash and collar wouldn’t cut it.
Keep in mind that your pup will want to be around you and will sneak into as many photos as possible!
I love this and encourage it for most of the photos. Let’s keep them out of some because you’ll end up with dog butts gracing all your wedding photos.
Love your pup dearly but unable to include them in the big day?
If the wedding setting isn’t ideal for your pup (or too far to travel), there are still heartfelt ways to make them part of the celebration:
Feature your dog in your engagement session
Add a custom illustration to your invites or signage
Name a signature cocktail after them
Use a cake topper with their image
Include a big photo booth cutout or pet-inspired décor
Share a few favorite photos in your guest book
